Project Yoga Program Manager Spotlight: Liz Comstock
Liz Comstock has been a Project Yoga teacher since 2019. She supports the mission by showing up wherever and whenever a teacher is needed! She became a yoga teacher “because I was so saddened and exhausted by the anxiety that children and teens are facing. It has truly reached big proportions. I wanted to do something to help kids (and adults) feel better by learning the tools of yoga. I want them to know that they are strong in their body. I want people to know that they are loved and to love themselves. I want them to love yoga so that they will come back.”
She has been practicing yoga for 20 years - she took her first-ever yoga class when she was very pregnant. She returned later and was hooked. She is a newer yoga teacher, receiving her RYT 200 certification in Spring of 2019 - the same year her children graduated from college and high school. She had to get in on the act.
Since her certification, she has taught yoga to small and large groups, individuals, adults, and children. Her interest in teaching yoga grew out of a desire to help youth manage anxiety and stress. She believes that yoga provides an excellent toolbox that we can select from when we need help in feeling better. Liz has a background in theatre and is a professional actress and acting coach. She has performed at various local theaters and in some horrible commercials. She also performs in a fun band, Liz and the Perfectly Adequate Trio, with her husband Mike on drums! She hopes you’ll come hear them play sometime.
Liz likes to make people feel good. She brings her playfulness and sense of humor to class and hopes to make you occasionally laugh on the mat. She also says, “YOGA IS FOR EVERYBODY! THERE! I SAID IT.” She was yelling when she said that. Wow. She must really mean it. She currently teaches at The Yoga Bar in Newport and is available for private lessons.
Liz shares a little bit about herself and her practice.
How does yoga impact your life?
My body is stronger and it has become more flexible. My emotional state is much stronger. I observe more and react less. I find myself getting angry way less than I used to. I try to understand where people are coming from.I can really step back and look at things differently most of the time. Things are still annoying but less things are annoying. I have more confidence.
